The Brake Is the Point

Why a government pulling the plug on its own frontier model — even clumsily — is a quietly human moment

Last Friday at 5:21pm Eastern, Anthropic got a letter. By the end of the night, two of its most powerful models — Fable 5 and Mythos 5 — were dark for every customer on Earth. The U.S. Commerce Department, citing national security and export-control authority, ordered the company to cut off access for any foreign national, inside or outside the country, including Anthropic's own non-citizen employees. Compliance at that scope left no surgical option. So the switch went off for everyone.

Anthropic's response was fast, public, and pointed. They believe it's a misunderstanding. They argue the jailbreak the government got spooked by surfaced only minor, already-known vulnerabilities. These are the kind other models, including OpenAI's, can stumble into without any bypass at all. They warned that if a narrow flaw like this were grounds for recalling a model used by hundreds of millions, you'd essentially freeze frontier AI deployment across the entire industry.

On the technical merits, I think Anthropic is probably right. The government has not, as of this writing, shown its work. The evidence shared was verbal. The concern was vague. And "this capability is widely available elsewhere" is a hard argument to wave away.

And yet.

I want to make a case my own readers may not expect from me: this is, on balance, a good thing. Not because the government got the details right — I don't think it did. But because of what the moment proves can happen.

What I actually teach

Everything I build rests on one stubborn idea: AI is not replacing you. It's amplifying you. I say it to small-business owners in Indianapolis and to learners in Lagos and Liberia. It's not a slogan to me; it's a design constraint. The whole point of human-centered AI is that the human stays in the loop. Judgment, agency, and accountability live with people, not with the machine and not with the momentum of the machine's release schedule.

Here's the part we don't say often enough: that principle has to scale past the individual. If a single learner deserves to keep their hand on the wheel, so does a society. The human in the loop isn't only the person at the keyboard. Sometimes it's a regulator, an institution, a slow and imperfect public process. Amplification without a human able to say "wait" isn't amplification. It's just acceleration with better marketing.

For three years, the honest worry about frontier AI hasn't only been that a model might do something dangerous. It's been that no one could stop it if it did. That the releases were happening faster than any human institution could meaningfully respond. That the brake pedal was, functionally, decorative.

Friday, someone pressed the brake. And the car stopped.

That is not a small thing. For all the complaints about how it was done, we now have a demonstrated, real-world fact: a deployed frontier model, live to the public, can be switched off by human authority within hours. The lever exists. It is connected to something. A person can pull it.

I would rather live in a world where that lever exists and gets pulled clumsily than in a world where it was always a myth.

Being fair to Anthropic

Let me be just as honest in the other direction, because human-centered doesn't mean naive.

The way this was done was bad. A democratic society exercising authority over powerful technology should do it the way you'd want any authority exercised over you. You would demand transparency, with reasons stated, with evidence on the table, with a process you could predict in advance. None of that happened here. A 5:21pm letter with no specifics, no published technical basis, and a scope so broad it swept in a company's own engineers is not a model of good governance. It's a model of governance in a hurry.

Anthropic's frustration is valid, and so is the chilling worry underneath it. Applying this standard inconsistently — one company singled out, while others go untouched for the same capability — doesn't get us safety. You get arbitrariness. You get politicization that is corrosive to exactly the trust that real oversight depends on. You also hand every other lab a reason to keep their most capable work quiet, undeployed, and unexamined, which is the opposite of what makes anyone safer.

So I'm not celebrating the execution. I'm celebrating the demonstration of the capability, and asking that we now do the harder work of making the next pull of the brake a fair one.

Those are different things. Holding both at once is the entire job.

The difference between a brake and a tripwire

Here's the distinction I keep coming back to.

A tripwire is automatic, opaque, and dumb. It fires when something crosses it. That is, regardless of whether or not crossing it was actually a problem. You can't reason with a tripwire. You can only be surprised by it. What happened Friday had a lot of tripwire energy: sudden, unexplained, indifferent to context.

A brake is different. A brake is a human deciding to slow down, for a reason they can name, that you can evaluate and argue with. A brake is governable. A brake is human-centered.

What we got was a brake operated like a tripwire. The fix isn't to rip out the brake. The fix is to put a thoughtful human firmly in charge of it — with rules written down in advance, evidence shared in the open, and the same standard applied to everyone.

Anthropic, to its credit, has said almost exactly this for years: government should be able to block unsafe deployments, through a process that is transparent, fair, clear, and grounded in technical facts. They're right. Friday failed that test. The answer to a failed test is a better test — not no test at all.

Why I'm choosing optimism here

I teach people who have every reason to feel that powerful technology is something that happens to them. Things are decided in rooms they're not in, shipped on timelines they didn't set. The most important thing I can tell them is that this is not the natural order of things. Humans built these systems, and humans can govern them. The loop is real and they are in it.

For three years, that's been partly an article of faith. We asserted that frontier AI was governable because the alternative was unbearable. Friday turned a little of that faith into evidence. Imperfect, frustrating, precedent-setting evidence, yet evidence. The machine did not get a vote. A person did.

That's the world I want my learners to grow up working in. One where the answer to "can anyone actually stop this?" is no longer a nervous "we hope so," but a plain "yes, and now let's make sure they do it fairly."

The brake works. That's the good news, and it's bigger than this one bad letter.

Now the human work begins: making sure the hand on the lever is steady, the reasons are public, and the rule is the same for everyone. That's not a technical problem. It's a human one.

Which, if you've heard me say it once, you've heard me say it a thousand times. It is the only kind that ever really mattered.
